While wandering around Amarante’s historic centre we came across some traditional shops that are harder to find these days in bigger cities. They are a kind of old fashioned supermarket that sells every kind of product, even birds!!

On one of these shops (shown on the photo, just after you leave the Monastery square behind) fruit is very tasty and you may buy delicious seasonal products, as is the case of chestnuts in October. Also, it is worth buying here nuts and dried figs.

In Amarante there are several typical sweets, all made with eggs and sugar. Their names vary – lérias, papos de freira, and much more – but basically they all consist, as I mentioned, of a base made with eggs and sugar.

I bought some of these tasty sweets at the café shown on the photo (by the Roman Bridge). Their pastry is very good and cheap. They have about 5 or 6 varieties of the mentioned typical sweets and also a kind of cake (which I didn’t taste). I bought a box with assorted egg sweets which didn’t last long, … :-)

Great descriptions and fantastic photography. (I love the one with the blue boat hidden in one of the travelogues). You promote your beautiful country very well.
