Getting TO/AROUND: Arriving in Amarante is very easy if you are travelling by car. Both driving from Porto or from Vila Real you should take the IP4 fast road and just follow the signs – access is very well signalized. If you are driving from Vila Real you will go through a swirling road down the Marão Mountain which is very scenic.

When you arrive in Amarante the best option is to park your car. There are 2 parking areas available near the historic centre – one of them is along the River and another one is situated by the Monastery after you cross the Bridge. I believe that it is easier to find a parking space on the park that is situated along the River. The cost is 0.60euro per 2 hours. There is a maximum limit of 2 hour allowed so you should return and revalidate your ticket.

Getting TO/AROUND: Walking is the best option to explore Amarante. The square by the Monastery is restricted to traffic and from here you will easily walk to main must sees within the city – all are very close to each other.

On the other streets of historic centre, although cars are allowed, I noticed that there was some traffic as streets are very narrow and there are cars parked along the road. So walking around is, by far, the best option to get to know Amarante.

Great descriptions and fantastic photography. (I love the one with the blue boat hidden in one of the travelogues). You promote your beautiful country very well.
