  • Favorite Thing: During my first time in Amarante I found it such a nice town to visit, a pleasant “discovery”, the only thing I could complain about was the weather, the grayish sky which made everything look darker. But my overall appreciation of the town bathed by the River Tamega was so good that I returned 5 months later. The friend who was visiting with me (also in Amarante for the first) said she thought that it was probably the nicest town in Portugal.

My second visit there was so much “luckier” as the sun was always shinning. And it only made my stay there more enjoyable. It confirmed my “passion” for Amarante and I am sure I will return again and again. During the short period I was staying near the city (only 4 days) I visited Amarante more than once both during the day and at night.

  • Favorite Thing: The lovely city is bathed by River Tamega. Amarante’s beautiful architecture by its margins and green streets reflect on its water. The River is crossed by a Roman bridge that leads visitors into the city’s historic centre with beautiful churches and narrow streets amidst pleasant houses and welcoming locals.

Along its quiet margins is noticeable the River's importance to the city’s amusement: boats for renting, fishermen, picnics ad green parks. Also, there is a huge offer of restaurants with tables on big balconies that overlook the River for a pleasant lunch or dinner.

  • Favorite Thing: Amarante's architecture being very simple is also very charming (to me). It consists of small buildings with huge wooden windows; some of these buildings are colourful while others are plain simple, contrasting with the wood's dark colour.

Apart from the simple buildings there are also some contrasting manor houses, with nice balconies and some of them show panels made in azulejos (typical Portuguese hand painted tiles).

  • Favorite Thing: Amarante is the birthplace of some notorious Portuguese, such as the poet Teixeira de Pascoaes and the writer Agustina Beça Luis. Also the famous cubist painter Amadeo de Souza Cardoso was born in Amarante.

In the green lawn situated in front of the Tourism Office building there is a statue of poet Teixeira de Pascoaes and the Museum is named after the painter Amadeo de Souza Cardoso.

  • Favorite Thing: For some information about the lovely city and a detailed street map with major highlights go to the Tourism Office. When you cross the roman bridge towards the church turn right and the Tourism Office is situated on a white building by the green lawn. It is opened every day, including weekends and bank holidays.

  • Favorite Thing: Amarante is part of the District of Porto, located on the North of the country. It is situated about 50km of Porto. But we visited Amarante when in Vila Real, the adjoining district, as Amarante is nearer Vila Real than Porto – only 30km separate the two cities.

Great descriptions and fantastic photography. (I love the one with the blue boat hidden in one of the travelogues). You promote your beautiful country very well.
