Near Évora there is a small town called Estremoz. Estremoz is famous nationwide and also in other countries due to its white marble – it is called the “white gold of Estremoz”. I’ve read that Portugal is the second European supplier of white marble, after Italy. About 90% of Portugal’s white marble extraction is done in Estremoz area. So, in Évora you will find some beautiful sculptures made in this “precious” stone, such as the one on my photo. This sculpture is located on a small garden by the Roman Temple.

People: Orange Trees

All over Alentejo region, and also in Évora, you will find orange trees in the streets and backyards. Being a bigger city, it is not that frequent any more to find the orange trees on Évora’s streets, but you will find plenty on private houses and backyards. Even on restaurants and open air cafes you will notice them, as is the case of this one on my photo – it is situated in Restaurant dos Lóios (inside Convent of Lóios) where there is a pleasant garden with open air tables in the shadow of these and other trees.

Évora’s main squares and also tiny side streets are full of pigeons. It is always fun to observe little children feeding them or running after them trying, in vain, to grab them. If you look up, you will notice that there are a lot of pigeons hiding in the lamps, windows and roofs. Even the beautiful round window of the Cathedral was covered in pigeons when I visited it.

Street scenes: White houses with yellow or blue stripes

Évora’s typical houses, as well as in the Alentejo region, are painted in white and have blue or yellow stripes around the windows, doors and at the bottom. Some say that the blue stripes were meant to keep the bad spirits way from the house and owners. I wonder if the yellow has the same meaning, probably it does.
