Get away from the touristy routes and wander through Évora’s charming streets. Most streets are very narrow, cobbled and sometimes steep. Évora is not a big city, so you will easily find yourself your way through. On these streets you will come across locals on their daily life – mostly an elderly population, quietly living and enjoying their calm life: observing passers-by on the window or by the door/porch, hanging clothes to dry on the windows (to the streets), watering the flowerpots on the balconies, men playing cards games, children playing on the street, …. Get lost and enjoy this beautiful city and welcoming population. Don’t forget to pay attention to architecture details!

Amongst all the beautiful details you may come across wandering in Évora’s “side streets”, this Manueline window is one of my favourites - although the window my photo shows is the simplest of that house! Manueline style is a Portuguese style from the Discoveries epoch (16th century) and it depicts elaborate details from the seas and the ships, such as cords, knots and so on. But in Évora there are also many Roman details and also Moorish style, a heritage from Roman occupancy of this city and Moorish conquests.
