Guimarães is European Capital of Culture in 2012; so, for now, as I write this, the city is pampering itself and getting even more beautiful and ready for the upcoming events.
The city is under major refurbishments and traffic is chaotic. No places to park your car, temporary road signs, different directions, a lot of scaffolding, noise and dust.
But don't let be put down by this: Guimarães has a lot to offer and is so charming. It is the birthplace of Portugal, there's a feel of history in every corner, it's classified by Unesco as World Heritage Site, it's well-kept, food is delicious, people are welcoming, but weather may sometimes be extreme: very hot or very cold, depends on when you visit.
Guimarães is situated on the northwest of Portugal, in the District of Braga; this region is named Minho. It is situated about 55km from Porto (Portugal’s second main city, usually referred to as the Capital of the North) and about 365km from Lisbon. Also, from Braga the capital city of this District it is just a short trip of about 20km.

Guimarães looks like a very pretty town, and sitting on a bench on one of those smaller, more quiet squares in Old Town sonds to be nice!
Micas, great updates and newly written tips about one of my favourite Portuguese cities. I can't beleive that this time you only went there to buy some Fly London shoes, a brand I haven't even heard of. *winkygrin*
The architecture here is wonderful, especially Praca Toural. YOur have done a very good job of presenting this fine town with good pictures and comments.
I like your page... I have portugal on my next trip list. when is the best time to visit Portugal??
This looks like a very pleasant and interesting place. I never knew that this was "the cradle of Portugal" and the country's first capital.
Hi. Great page. I'll be visiting this lovely place next week. Thanks for the tips.
Alex, I don't know how I missed this page for so long! Great tips and photos of Guimaraes! I would love to be strolling those streets or enjoying a quiet sit down under the trees in the Square!
