general: Portovenere
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Portovenere is a lovely village perched on cliffs and bathed by the sea. Major main sees on this village are the castle and the church. Don’t forget a stroll on the street by the shore as it is very pleasant, as well as a stroll on the inner narrow streets.

Also, Portovenere is a good starting point to explore the Cinque Terre villages, as boats depart from Portovenere port very frequently.

Being so nice and beautiful, Portovenere is somewhat touristy, but I guess that it doesn’t spoil the beauty and ambiance of this Golfo dei Poeti romantic and inspiring village.

    Poet's Gulf: Golfo dei Poeti
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Golfo dei Poeti (Poet’s Gulf) is the name of this coast, also known as La Spezia’s Gulf. It spreads from Portovenere and the Cinque Terre till Lerici, being that La Spezia is situated on a bay.

It is said that Byron and Shelley named the area, since both were great admirers of this beautiful coastal landscape. They say that Byron once swam across the bay from Portovenere till San Terenzo to visit Shelley.

    general: Architecture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: I find Portovenere architecture quite pleasant as houses are very colourful – mainly yellow and pink. Houses are straight and all lined up along the narrow streets.

Seen from the sea these houses provide a bright look to Portovenere contrasting with the beautiful blue water and the rock dull colour.

    general: Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: It seems to be quite common on the Ligurian coast that people enjoy every little bit of space by the sea, even the rocky spots. If you are a fan of this sort of beach, Portovenere will not let you down. On the end of the coastal path by the garden there is a sandy beach where people bath and enjoy the sun. Also, along the path, we saw some people enjoying the sun on the rocky shore. Opposite to Portovenere (across the sea) there is another sandy beach area, where a lot of people were enjoying the hot summer days.

Liguria and Cinque Terre are doubtless among the most beautiful spots in Italy, and the area is on our planning list for next year, so your great pictures and most interesting descriptions encouraged us even more to go there .....
