One of my favorite things to do in Kaua'i is walk on the beach in the early morning. Since I'm from the Midwest, my body thinks it's 11am when it's sunrise in Kaua'i. The air is cool, fresh, and the sight is heavenly.

Directions: Find any beach...preferably on the Coconut Coast (East part of Kaua'i.)

If you come to Kaua'i, you MUST see the Na Pal'i coast. It is only accessible by sea or helicopter. This was the end of the line where I could drive. These following shots are the Northwest coast of this topographical marvel. The Na Pal'i coast is most recently renowned for its filming location for Jurassic Park.

To give you some perspective on how gigantic the Na Pal'i coast is...check out the little white lines in the middle of the photo...just over the treeline. That's a pretty decent sized waterfall! Check out my WATERFALLS ALBUM for bigger, better shots.

Waimea Canyon was equally my favorite stop in Kaua'i along with the Na Pal'i coast. It is known as the "Grand Canyon of the South Pacific." I have also been to the Grand Canyon. Although Waimea Canyon doesn't compare to the Grand Canyon in size, it's vegetation makes it much more beautiful in my opinion. Directions: Drive north on Waimea Canyon Road (500A & B) off of Highway 50 near the town of Waimea.

I actually took about 8 pictures of Waimea Canyon and put them together on the table at home showing the full panoramic view. This was really cool...a great way to show friends and family what it really looks like.

Kilauea Lighthouse began lighting the way for mariners in 1913. It served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships sailing on the Orient run. The historic light station consists of a concrete lighthouse, three field stone keepers' quarters, a fuel oil shed, cisterns, and a supply landing platform. It is one of the nation's most intact historic light stations. Even in the early years, travelers came to enjoy the area's scenic beauty and to explore the magnificent light. Today Kilauea Point is one of Kauai‘i's most visited sites with more than 500,000 visitors a year. The landmark played a prominent role in the life of the nearby sugar plantation town of Kilauea. The lighthouse is a symbol of the town; and the Point is one of the island's most loved places. Kilauea Point is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. After the light was decommissioned in 1976, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acquired it in 1985 and currently manages the 31 acre site as part of a 203 acre wildlife refuge. Unbeknownst to most people, the birds along these cliffs are the REAL highlight. There are 12 or-so different species of bird that live and breed here. It is quite a spectacular sight.

I had the great opportunity to sail up the only navigable river in the state, Wailua River. We reached a stopping point at the well known Fern Grotto in Wailua River State Park.
