The Bathwick Boatman - Bath

The Bathwick Boatman

The Bathwick Boatman: Great view of the river as you eat

Set alongside one of the prettiest reaches of the River Avon, within the complex of the historic Bath Boating Station (established circa 1933) lies this unique Victorian building that is the much regarded Bathwick Boatman Restaurant.

On those warm spring days or balmy summer evenings enjoy dining on the veranda overlooking the river Avon. Should the weather be less inviting relax in the warm surroundings inside and splendour at the photographs and boating memorabilia dating back over 100 years.

The Boating Station boasts a collection of privately owned rowing punts skiffs and canoes, hand built on the premises by the fifth generation of family boat builders and with wood that is only bought from managed forest in Europe and South America. All the craft are available for hire by the hour or the day.

Favorite Dish: The Boatman has a deserved reputation for its quality food and great variety of choices that should satisfy every palate.

From its specials boards, lunch and a'la carte menus, draught beers and comprehensive wine list. Prime beef steaks, "Thai" style curries, lamb steak with mustard mash & read onion gravy, cream and tarragon seafood with wild rice. Sticky toffee pudding with carmel and toffee sauce or iced lemon meringue are just a few of the choices that should tempt the undecided!

And not to be missed the very popular traditional Sunday lunch.

I tried the lamb myself and although it was good, I'm quite sure I've had better.

The Moon & Sixpence by night - Bath

The Moon & Sixpence by night

The Moon and Sixpence: It was worth the wait

I found all the restaurants in Bath pretty much required you to book in advance or else you would need to wait. Well this is one of those I waited around at to get a table, as I was impressed by it's layout and design. It's a little out of the way and hard to spot as you need to walk down a short narrow alley to get to it, but fortunately they have a sign above the alley. We had to wait around at the bar for about an hour before getting the table although I don't regret it, the food was fantastic. If your going to eat out in Bath I recommend this restaurant as the best choice, and value for money for the quality even though Bath is expensive and this is a posh restaurant after all.

The bar is open from 11.00 am, Lunch is available from 12.00 noon and Dinner between 5.30pm and 10.30pm.

They can seat 100 people, have smoking & non-smoking sections and accept all major credit cards. Email: reservations@moonandsixpence.co.uk

Favorite Dish: I had the Chinese style duck salad with beansprouts & a hoi sin dressing and it was most exquisite. The presentation is excellent and almost a shame to make a mess of it.

Address: 6a Broad Street, Bath BA1 5LJ

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: Leave the M4 at junction M4J18 and go straight ahead into A46 towards Bath. Continue straight, go over a roundabout, the next one take the 3rd exit onto A4. Bear left into A3039, then continue straight into A4, you should see the sign on your left.
