Chiang Saen Historic City,Chiang Rai

60 kms in the North East of Chiang Rai Province.

A fortified city on the Mekong river. It was once an important city controling trade with Yunnan,Southern China . Founded in 1328 AD by a grandson of King Mang Rai .Rose during the Lanna period, governed by princes from the royal family of Chiang Mai . And came under Burmese rule in 1558. In 1804 , King Rama I prevented city from invaders by burnt the city and abandoned for many years

The old city situated on the West bank of Mae Khong River .
The city surrounded by moat built from brick in the shape of rectangle and parallels to the Mae Khong River. On 3 side of moat, there?re 5 city gates and fortifications in a curve plan called Yang Teong gate ( N ) / Nong Mud gate,Chiang Saen gate , Tap Man gate ( W ) / Dinkor gate ( S ) .
Inside and outside the city , there?re so many buddhist temples ,most ?re ruins. The important temple (Wat) ?re Wat Chedi Luang ,Wat Pa Sak (outside ,near the Chiang Sean gate) ,Wat Pra That Chomkitti (outside on the North West ,on Jomkitti mountain). The art and architectural style of all ancient temples shows a unique style of Chiang Sean art in Lanna period.

I really love this old city . It's quiet and simple and easy to walk around. : )
