La Venta - City & Archeological Site of the Olmecs

by lokibinky - last update: Dec 4, 2003

The Temple at La Venta

Temple
Unfortunately, this site has not been excavated. Primarily for two reasons: the cost and these temples were not made of brick or stone. They were made of clay and dirt....therefore even if excavated there may not be any 'form' to the temple itself.

We WERE allowed to climb the back portion of the temple. AND looks are very deceiving....it is quite a climb and the view from the top is GREAT.

Unfortunately, there were these GIGANTIC flying ants at the top that swarmed and made us hurry down before we really wanted to.

'Welcome to the Jungle'

Toward the end of the "clearly marked" paths that winded us around the main temple, was this 'off the beaten path' path.

This path was lined with mother in laws tongue (sorry for all those moms in laws out there, but I don't know the real name). Every once in a while the path would lead to an opening with a reproduction of the original Olmec Heads, Alters, and Sculptures. Each had a description plaque. Most of the original were taken long ago here, to Villahermosa, to La Venta Park. To see the pics of the real mcoys see that section on the website under Villahermosa-Must See Sites.

We saw beautiful plants, trees, birds, and butterflies.
Warrior

Mis With An Olmec Warrior

This is one of the artifacts found here. Most Olmec sculptures of men were warriors, complete with a helmet!

Pros:"Only an hour from Villahermosa and free admission on Sundays. Also, there is a gift shop across the street with a very friendly small parrot that is very friendly. There is also an indoor museum on site with additional artifacts."
Cons:"Lots of mosquitos...bring spray...no drink bar on site, but across the street there is."
In A Nutshell:"Interesting trip to the jungle!"
