This tiny coastal village is located on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales.
The historic town of Beaumaris came into being by a Royal Charter from King Edward 1 in 1296.
Named after Beau Maris the French for Beautiful Marsh. Edward I built his magnificant castle in 12th century and got rid of all Welsh inhabitants by forcing them to go and live in nearby Newborough.
The lovely town, well known for the castle, teems with interesting things to do if you have spare time on your way between Ireland and North Wales or England.
If you have more time it is worth checking into a local hotel or guest house and exploring the town and off the beaten-track. A week-end is usually enough. |
As far back as Tudor times, Beaumaris merchants brought goods from around the world and then repacked and shipped on to the mainland.
Over many years and with the building of the Suspension Bridge at Menai Bridge the town of Beaumaris became less important as a trading centre.
The Victorian's rediscovered its charms and flocked here for boating, the seaside and the dramatic scenery.
One of the town's busy periods coincides with the Regatta held on the Menai Straits and hosted by The Royal Anglesey Yacht Club held 9th - 21st August 2009 |
