I was here on my honeymoon, so anywhere really would have been great, but Aix really is a great little town. Actually it's not that little. There is a university here, so there are a lot of students, which adds to the life of Aix. It was founded in 122 B.C. and since then, it's been a Roman military outpost, a civilian colony, the administrative capital of a province of the later Roman Empire, the seat of an archbishop, and the official residence of the medieval comtes de Provence.
Paul Cézanne was from here, and he immortalized the countryside nearby, which is absolutely beautiful. If you get bored with Aix, check it out. |
