La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Nuestra Señora de los Zacatecas, título que le otorgara Felipe II en 1585, fue fundada el 8 de septiembre de 1546. Su auge minero permitió un desarrollo urbano que le daría una relevante y creciente importancia económica, política y social; convirtiéndose así en una de las principales ciudades de la Nueva España. La ciudad “con rostro de cantera y corazón de plata”, está ubicada al fondo de una barranca formada por varios cerros: de la Virgen, de Clérigos, del Grillo, del Padre y de la Bufa; este último, es emblema de la ciudad, baluarte de la patria y, testigo del triunfo de la División del Norte sobre el ejército huertista.

The Very noble and Loyal City of Our Lady of the Zacatecas, title that Philip II was granting it in 1585, was founded on September 8, 1546. Su trazo urbanístico está plegado a la tierra y siguiendo las sinuosidades de la montaña, creando calles a desnivel, ondulantes y mixtilíneas; plazas y rincones románticos, insospechados y encantadores. Muchas de las calles todavía llevan nombres de ignorada antigüedad que hablan de un fantástico pasado, evocando oficios, leyendas, tradición y religiosidad, ejemplo de ello son los callejones de: la Mantequilla, los Gallos, las Merceditas, de San Francisco, del Santero, del Indio Triste, del Mono Prieto, del Tenorio, del Resbalón, etc. El espíritu religioso de sus habitantes y la bonanza de sus ricas minas, se reflejaron en la construcción de suntuosos edificios civiles y religiosos, de los que se conservan en la actualidad muchos e importantes recintos. En 1993, el centro histórico fue declarado por la UNESCO “Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad”, esta distinción fue concedida en reconocimiento al valor y belleza arquitectónica de sus majestuosos edificios levantados durante el periodo colonial y que hoy, se exhiben para deleite y contemplación de la humanidad. Zacatecas es reflejo de sobriedad, tanto en su arquitectura como en el carácter de sus habitantes, denotando así: su esfuerzo, orgullo y hospitalidad.
