Mission San Juan Capistrano - San Antonio

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Mission San Juan Review

Originally established as San Jose de los Nazonis in east Texas, Mission San Juan Capistrano was moved to its permanent home on the east bank of the San Antonio River in 1731. San Juan was a regional supplier of agricultural produce with the orchards and gardens providing peaches, melons, pumpkins, grapes and peppers. The irrigated fields produced corn, beans, sweet potatoes, squash and even sugar cane. The mission also had large herds of as many as 3500 sheep and cattle.

Tour San Jose with a Volunteer Guide

When I got home from our trip I read "Texas" by James Michener - it was over 1100 pages long. Before our trip it really didn't interest me, but after seeing the missions and hearing about all the things that were done there, the book held my interest, as I could envision all the events that took place there so many years ago.
Displaying Moorish influence, San Jose is the best known of the Texas missions; it's enormous size gives understanding to it's reputation as "Queen of the Missions". Here we took a tour with a guide who pointed out the aqueducts and other water systems used in San Jose Mission. Also be sure to note the fine detail of the legendary Rose Window; this design is found throughout the city of San Antonio.

Enjoy the sights on the Rio San Antonio - San Antonio

Enjoy the sights on the Rio San Antonio

Quite a nice boatride Riverwalk & Riverwalk Mall Review

We enjoyed another beautiful day of great weather when we went to the Riverwalk.
There were not any long lines waiting for the boats when we bought our tickets. We paid $5 for a senior rate for the Riverboat Cruise. Our guide pointed out the significant buildings along the river. It's a different way to see the city of San Antonio, and later when you walk along the river, you can identify places that were mentioned by the guide. You can pick up the Riverboat Cruise just a very short walk from the Alamo. We walked through the mall that is there, which took us to the river.

Directions: Near the Alamo

Gardens at the Alamo - San Antonio

Visit The Alamo early in the morning Alamo Review

The city bus cost $1 for a ride to the stop by the Alamo. We arrived early in the morning and found very few people there. We enjoyed the outside gardens tremendously and also listened to a historical story by a guide about the events that happened here in 1836. There is a good movie to view for no charge before starting the inside visit.
Originally a mission, San Antonio de Velaro later became known as The Alamo. It was originally constructed as the first of five missions in the San Antonio area.
There is no charge for admission at The Alamo or the other four missions.
We spent over 2 hours here so don't be in a hurry when you visit.

Directions: NW of the Riverwalk Mall
