Ancient Armenia | Yerevan with Mt Ararat in the back |
Economically devastated by a bloody civil war against neighbouring Azerbaijan and ever since boycotted by Turkey and Azerbaijan, Armenia seems to recover slowly. Landlocked Armenia is a mostly mountaineous region with its highest peak nowadays outside the country - Mt. Ararat lies next to the border in Turkey. In Armenia you can have it all - except for lush green. During the war, most of the country's trees have been used for heating. Despite the poverty, Armenians treat travellers with great hospitality. In contradiction to Georgia, I always felt safe in Armenia and got the chance to talk to many locals. |
