There are parts of Chicago that are not so safe for tourists. Parts of the Chicago's Southside are kind of rundown and are not that touristy (except for example, the Museum of Science and Industry, Hyde Park, and the University of Chicago). Personally I wouldn't want to walk alone on the streets of the Southside, both day and night. Downtown Chicago is fairly safe during the day as there are a lot of business and working people as well as tourists like you. But downtown also becomes dangerous at night, like in any big city. Avoid walking alone and use common sense.

The weather can get wild here in Chicago. Since the city is located right by Lake Michigan, there can be some unique, localized weather caused by the lake. That includes lake effect snow, big temperature variations between the city and the suburbs, and other problems such as wind and fog. Yes, it is a windy city here (the nickname wasn't wrong), so the windchills can be pretty low during the winter. Dress warmly!

Despite having a lot of multi-lane roads and interstates, Chicago experiences heavy traffic congestions on weekdays, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. I suggest on weekdays, use public transportation and take Metra into Chicago. If you are going to drive into Chicago, be prepared to wait in traffic for a very long time. Two areas I know of that are almost always congested: 1) In downtown Chicago at the intersection of I-90/94 and I-290. 2) Near the Indiana state line at the intersection of I-80/94 and I-294. Try to avoid those areas. Check the web site below for up-to-minute information on traffic in the Chicago area.
