BC Place Stadium: The story of a big stadium and small museum

BC Stadium is the home to the BC Lions. This is where Canada plays their variation of their neighbour's football. BC Stadium though has more to offer to the sports tourist. Inside the stadium is the BC Sports museum. It may be small but it provides a more than adequate history of sport in Canada. The museum also has some great items. I'm guessing they don't even realise how significant some of it is. For example a cricket bat signed by the great Don Bradman.

Granville Island is the marketplace Vancouver had to have. It's an enclave of markets, art and one good brewery. I highly recoomend catching the False creek ferry from Yaletown to get the full experience of the area.

Granville Island is a tourist mecca. It's a variety of places, sights and sounds, shops and galleries for most to enjoy. If you're not into all that then just head to the brewery to get the grand tour. Granville Island is home to not a bad drop. Otherwise venture around the markets setting for fresh food, touristy gifts, or quality art.

Grouse Mountain in summer is basically a tourist theme park. After taking the chair lift up the mountain visitors are able to experience a number of shows and exhibits. Everyone should at least sit and watch the Lumberjack show. It's really fantastic. In addition to the Lumberjacks there is a Birds of Prey show, a Bear Exhibit, chair lift and guide tours showing the local nature. The restuarant and takeaway operate during the summer if you're after refreshments. Real adventurers can walk up the mountain but I'd suggest the easier option.

The Mueseum of Anthropology located on the campus of the UBC is a great educational day trip for anyone wanting to learn about the First Nations people, their culture and history. The museum has gone to great lengths to preserve and document the history of local native tribes. If it weren't for this exhibit I would not have learnt so much about the natural history of BC. Take the guided gallery walk. These operate every few hours. As at September 2003 the entry cost was $9 (if I remember correctly). There are free lockers to store bags while walking around. The gift shop also has a number of items which are reasonably priced. Very suitable gifts

Yaletown: Yaletown - The cool place to live

Yaletown is a hugely redeveloped are to the south of town. Apparently it was the Expo 86 site. After years of neglect the area was redeveloped into what you see today, multiple high rise appartments, shops and a boardwalk along False Creek. The area is very clean, very modern, very chic.

If you haven't heard already everyone say Gastwon is a tourist trap then listen. Not all of Gastown is a tourist trap. Gastown still has a story to tell. Still has a value to contribute in the story of what makes up Vancouver. Sure I wouldn't make a special trip just to see this but if you're walking the area nearby all it takes is 15 minutes to walk up and down the one street. Of note we did enjoy a good meal at Brothers restaurant in Gastown. So maybe you could visit the area as a dinner spot. There are plenty of restuarants to try.

To the east side of downtown is the location of the Vancouver Chinese community. A strip of shops and grand entrance great visitors to the area. Be careful though where you venture as some of the streets to the side of Chnatown don't seem to be so inviting.

If you ever want to be evil to someone repeat these words. You should go and do the Grouse Grind. Whoa, we talking fitness junkie's extreme challenge or what. Anyone with a fitness urge can try this. It's 2km of straight up the mountain side stair climbing. And I don't mean prancy little steps.. I'm talking big arse giant natural incline steps of verying sizes and shapes. And after you do it you get the best that Grouse mountain has to offer in terms of free tourist shows. Best of all the ride down is only $5 each. Best $5 you'll ever spend. Its that or the pain of jarring your knees going down 2kms of stairs. It is important to track your time. fter all once you've done it you'll be able to brag about it. And perhaps if you're insane go and try beat it.

bbchild Wed Aug 8, 2007 09:36 UTC The clock is there to preserve Vancouver's history and is really more important to the people that live there. It's not there for tourists. No one put it there to try and impress you. No one cares if you're not interested it in, we just want your money. | JessH Mon May 14, 2007 08:58 UTC Hi Chad. Excellent tips here. Am really hoping to visit Canada someday soon, and your Vancouver tips are really informative. Thanks for sharing.
