    • Warning for all those who are not fans of post-modernist architectural experiments: do not go near the New National Theatre (Nemzeti Színház) !

    Sunken ancient temples, fire on the water, ziggurats & labirynths, cariathids, weird sculptures of beggars, travellers & parachuters,..... I'll never be able to understand what were the architects thinking when they designed this.

    • Among other imports from the West, Budapest was one of the first post-communist capitals to import the variety of stupid things.

    Like gated communities - whole neighbourhoods that are built for the nouveau riche, encircled by huge fences, with private police guarding new houses with swimming pools and expensive cars parked in front of the garages. If you manage to enter inside (like we did on one of the architectural guided tours) you'll find urban desert, an enclave of people creating isolated world in the midst of fast-changing post-communist reality.

    If it's in America - fine with me.
    If it is built in the middle of Europe, a continent where urban development was always marked with careful design of PUBLIC places - then I'd call it a stupid import.
