Plitvice lakes are formed from sixteen larger lakes, separated by travertine barriers and connected with scenic waterfalls. This all makes eight-kilometres long water rhapsody that was the first National Park in Croatia and is today contry's largest single tourist attraction.
Lakes are surrounded by forested hills, and special algae that produce travertine barriers are also responsible for the unique turquoise colour of the water, making it one of the most magnificent natural sights in Europe.
This national park, inscribed on Unesco list of World heritage is exceptionally well organized - from information at the entrances, shuttle buses and trains within the park, walking paths and rest areas. Several colour-coded paths will guide you through the main natural phenomenon, while hotels on the edge of the lake make a perfect holiday in unspoilt natural surroundings.
Conveniently located approximately halfway between Zagreb and the coast Plitvice lakes are a "must stop", and if you are visiting either Zagreb or the coast they make a logical destination for one day visit that can be easily done with public transport as well. |

balhannah Sat Nov 8, 2008 22:16 UTC Thankyou for the excellent tour of Plitvice lakes. You have answered the questions I wanted to know. It is a most beautiful area, and your photos are excellent. | trukdriver79 Tue Apr 15, 2008 20:19 UTC We plan on stopping through Plitvice on our way to Split. After we visit the lake, where is the best place to pick up a bus to Split? Also, if we spend the night, do you know which is the best nearby village to be closest to the bus in the morning? | ATLC Sat Jan 26, 2008 07:13 UTC Just started reading this page. Will be back later! | Basaic Wed Jan 23, 2008 22:48 UTC Hopefully the people will be patient with me if I use the wrong case. I usually try to speak the local language. |
