Solinjanka - Solin

Solinjanka

Souvenir: Souvenir shop

Solinjanka or Salonitanka, meaning woman from Solin / Salona is one of the most important Roman portraits found in Croatia. It shows Plautilla, the future wife of notorious Caracalla, at the young age and dates back from the beginning of 3rd Century. This portrait in marble is masterpiece of portrait art, and is included in most reviews of Roman arts in general.

What to buy: Originally found in Salona, it is now kept in Archaeological museum in Zagreb. But you can buy your own copy in a souvenir shop at the Tourist office in Zvonimirova street, opposite from the market place. They sell well made copies of other sculptures and ancient fragments from Salona, as well as postcards, posters, books and brochures, coffee cups, pens etc…

Mercator Center - Solin

Mercator Center

Mercator Centar: Mercator Centar

Large shopping centre on more than 30,000 square metres with big hypermarket and small shops offering everything from clothes to small stationery, pharmacy and electronic equipment.

Free parking at the basement. Non-inspiring and rather sterile but cheap and eatable food & coffee in typical hypermarket restaurants.

What to buy: Almost everything you might need.

Directions: Southern entrance to Solin - you can't miss this huge blue box if approaching by highway from Split.
Buses no. 1, 10 and 16 stop in front of it.

Open air market - Solin

Open air market

Open air market: Open air market

This small open air market in Zvonimirova street, opposite the Tourist office consists of only several stalls with fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. They are all grown in the surrounding areas of Solin and brought here by local people.

What to buy: Fresh fruits and vegetables.
During the summer don't miss the fresh watermellons. Salesmen keep them in the cold waters of Jadro river and then take it out in front of you - trust me, very refreshing if the outside temperature is 35 degrees or more :-)
