Getting TO/AROUND: Split Airport (code SPU) is situated in Kastela, about 25km north-west from Split. The main airline flying from Split is Croatia Airlines, offering 4-5 daily flights to Zagreb (35 minutes), as well as direct flights to Rome, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Prague. Via Zagreb you can catch connections to other European destinations. Other airlines that fly from Split are Adria Airways (to Ljubljana), Czech Airlines (Prague), Malev (Budapest), Sky Europe (Bratislava, Budapest), Snowflake (Stockholm, Copenhagen), Air Adriatic (Göteborg, London) and a number of charter airlines. Airport building is modern and in constant reconstructions in the last 2-3 years. As other airports in Croatia, it is quite small with limited shopping and café/restaurant possibilities but offering all of the usual services you might need (Info-office, Newsstands, Bank & Post office, Currency exchange, ATMs, Car rentals, Tourist information etc.)

Getting TO/AROUND: Getting to and from the Split airport is not that problematic as it might seem at the first sight. There are Croatia Airlines buses that wait for you on arrivals of all Croatia Airlines flights and depart from the Obala Lazareta (in front od the Diocletian’s palace in Split) 1,5 hours before departures of their flights. The ticket costs 30 kunas. OK, but what about other flights? Well, then you’re in trouble unless you know where to wait for the local bus since there’s no information about this at the airport. You may, of course, take a taxi that will cost you around 200 kunas to the center of Split. Or you may use local Promet bus #37, that operates on Split – Trogir route and passes in front of the airport. Buses pass every 20 minutes (30 mins on Sundays and holidays) – to catch them just walk across the parking lot and through a small olive-grove. There you’ll see two (rather ugly looking) yellow bus shelters – and voila: wait at the side of the Airport if you intend to go to Trogir, or across the road if your destination is Split. For Trogir you’ll need 1-fare zone ticket (8 kunas one way), for Solin 2-zone ticket (10 kunas) and for Split 3-zone ticket (14 kunas) - tickets can be bought in the bus. In Split buses arrive and depart from the local bus station situated at Sukoisanska street. If you don’t like walking, you can use the same ticket and catch any of the buses that pass Domovinskog rata street and lead either to Theatre square (HNK station: buses 1, 4 or 16) to Trznica (buses 2, 3, 9 and 10) or to the Ferry port (Trajektna luka: buses 2, 9 and 10).

Getting TO/AROUND: Train journey from Zagreb to Split is a beautiful journey - don't miss it if you have time. From Zagreb railroad first passes through corn-growing plains, then hilly area with vineyards between Jastrebarsko and Karlovac. At Ostarije train leaves Zagreb - Rijeka railroad and it's the beginning of Lika - a beautiful mountaineous area with contrasts of mountains, small plains, rivers and lakes. As the train approaches Knin the scars of the recent war will become more and more visible. And as you approach Split you'll be rewarded with one of the best views of Split and its surroundings as the train enters Kastela basin. There are several daily trains, including new tilting ICN trains that run between two cities in 5,5 hours. Or if the view is not of some great importance for you, you can book one of the sleeping cars in night trains. Some night trains during the summer have special "party cars" with DJs and a bar - makes the night on tracks pass quicker.

Getting TO/AROUND: Split is the major hub for buses going up and down the coast, as well as those directed inland. Croatian intercity bus system may be somewhat confusing with hundred of different private companies, but they create a network that is certainly one of the best in Europe. Buses are modern and air-conditioned. If you're travelling from a big town like Split you have to buy a ticket at the bus station. It is wise to buy a ticket at least a day before the journey since buses are very popular. Return tickets are cheaper, but in this case you have to return with the same company which can be somewhat limiting factor. Between Zagreb and Split there are about 30 departures daily by some 15 different companies. This means that at certain periods of the day there are buses every 30 minutes or so. Your ticket will have the seat number (broj sjedala), and sometimes there are several buses of the same company departing at the same time on the same route, so you'll also have to check for the bus number (autobus broj...). Note that you have to pay 5-8 kunas for each piece of luggage you want to be stored in bus luggage compartment. For timetables from Split click on the link below, and then click on "Vozni red". Zagreb bus station website is www.akz.hr.

Getting TO/AROUND: Local transport is served by a network of buses with 20 lines within Split and an extensive network of interurban buses that provide fast links with surrounding towns of Solin, Kastela and Trogir on the north-west and Stobrec, Podstrana and Omis on the eastern side of the Split connurbation. The area is divided into 4 fare zones, but if you intend only to travel within Split you'll be in the first zone. You'll find a map of fare zones here: www.promet-split.hr/zone.htmMost of the bus routes pass through three main bus stops in center of town: "HNK" in front of the Theatre, "Trznica" close to the main open-market place and "Opcina" further to the north in Domovinskog rata street. Their intervals range from every 10 to every 30 minutes, depending on the line and time of the day. You'll find all schedules here: www.promet-split.hr/grad.aspSingle tickets are sold by drivers, but if you buy ticket for 2 rides at the Promet kiosks it will be cheaper per one ride. The prices are: 8kn for a single (12kn for a double-ride ticket) for one zone, 10 (16,50)kn for 2-zones, 14 (21,50)kn for 3-zones and 18 (28,00)kn for 4-zones. In all zones children up to 6 years can go for free, and between 6 and 10 years pay a children's ticket that costs 3kn.

Getting TO/AROUND: Split is the largest transportation hub in Croatia, and Split ferry port is the largest passenger harbour in the country. Buses, trains, ferries, catamarans and hydrofoils all come to the same place, making it easy just to hop from one to another. This is also the place where you'll find airport buses. The maximum walking distance can be some 200 metres. Split is the halfway of the coastal ferry route: ferries start from Rijeka stopping in Zadar and Split (this is always an overnight journey) and continuing to Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik (always during the day - offering magnificent views of the Dalmatian islands). Besides coastal ferry many local ferries depart from Split to nearby islands: Supetar (on island of Brac), Rogac (Solta), Stari Grad (Hvar), Vis (Vis), Vela Luka (Korcula) and Lastovo (Lastovo). The only international line is the one to Ancona with several overnight ferries and fast catamaran link during the summer. Sometimes coastal ferry continues from Dubrovnik to Bari in Italy as well.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are travelling without a car then it's faster to take one of the catamarans or hydrofoils from Split to the islands. They make an extensive network of waterbuses enabling local people and students from Brac and Solta for instance to live on the island and work or study in Split. Since beaches in Split are not very spectacular there are many excursion catamarans during the summer departing from Split in the morning and returning from the islands in the evening - making this an excellent opportunity for one-day trips to islands. Note that during the winter it is safer to count on slower ferries since catamarans and especially hydrofoils can't sail on bad weather.
