Göteborg (pronounced in Swedish as "yee-te-bor") is the second largest city in the country.
This town was founded on a strategic place on western coast of Sweden by the king Gustav II Adolf in 1621. It was an important harbour and merchant town, surrounded by impressive walls and fortresses. Built on a regular pattern the city centre featured also many canals, come of them still remaining.
Large strip of parks now encircles centre of the town on a place where bastions once stood. City's main street - Kungsportsavenyn gives the city more European character than you'll find in other Scandinavian cities.
Although still a big port, city's harbour and shipbuilding facilities are in the process of dynamic transformation, as in the Lilla Bommen area that now houses some new business and cultural institutions.
Liseberg amusement park, situated close to the city centre, is one of the biggest single attractions in Sweden.

Nemorino Sun May 4, 2008 20:07 UTC Götaplatsen reminds me of the Prager Straße in Dresden -- big and wide and empty. (Especially in January in the slush.) Thanks for including a tip on the opera house. What does "Sex Taburetter" mean? Sex I suppose means six? | HORSCHECK Sun Jun 4, 2006 21:40 UTC Niksa, as I was in Göteborg in April I just had to re-read your fabulous page. But I can't believe that you as a tram-spotter took a photo of the new trams instead of the lovely old ones ... ;-) | DPando Thu Apr 6, 2006 18:00 UTC stunning tips for a nice city ..for sure!! thanks mate | JLBG Thu Nov 25, 2004 03:57 UTC I have always skipped Göteborg to go faster to Swedish wilderness. I know now that I should have taken some time for Göteborg too ! Thank you Niksa ! |
