Wall of Pain

During the War in Croatia in 1993 this spontanious monument was built by ordinary people, mainly mothers and relatives of killed and missing soldiers and civilians.
It was built around the building where UN Peace Mission to Croatia had its headquarters. Croatia was in flame at that time, many towns under siege and fierce bombarding from earth and air. The "Peace Mission" people were merely observers, not doing anything to stop the aggression.

You'll find Wall of Pain in Zagreb, at the corner of Ilica and Selska street. Take tram No. 2, 6 or 11 or bus no. 109 (direction Crnomerec).

Wall of Pain is by far the strongest monuments of War in Croatia, built spontaneously at the beginning of the unfortunate 1990s. It consists of 13,650 bricks with names on them - black bricks for killed persons, and red bricks for missing persons. The names were written by mothers and relatives.

13,650 bricks, each symbolising one tragic story, one life that ended brutally during the War.
