Arcadia Round Barn - Arcadia
Arcadia Round Barn

The only truly round barn in Oklahoma, most are hexagon, octagon, not round. The Round Barn is 60' diameter and 45' in height, two levels. The loft has a wood floor.

The structure was designed to withstand tornadic conditions. A fallacy, but...it must work, the barn has been here 100 years and it is still standing.

History

A unique landmark barn on Route 66 restored by the Arcadia Historical and Preservation Society. The barn, which served for years served a dual purpose as a site for dances and a home for livestock, was a rural architectural landmark along Route 66.

When, following years of neglect, the barn's immense roof collapsed in 1988, the repair bill was estimated at $165,000.00. Luther Robison, a carpenter since 1940 who had long admired the building, knew he could save the barn and bypass the exorbitant price tag.

By recruiting volunteers, selling inscribed round barn bricks, setting up a roadside donation box and seeking donated labor and equipment, Luther Robison restored the round barn over the course of over four years for $65,000.

For this reason, they were given the 1992 National Preservation Honor Award for outstanding craftsmanship and perseverance in the restoration of the historic 1898 Arcadia Round Barn.
