    • Monumental Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria, founded in 1152 (classified in UNESCO's International Heritage list). Inside: Gothic tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro; cloisters; the Chapter House and immense kitchen. Churches: Misericórida (Renaissance portal and 17th century tiles) and Conceição (17th century).

    • Inside the kitchen you can feel the invironment of old times. Giant ovens served to prepare great amounts of food. The tiles in the ovens are still very well conserved.

    • The beautiful garden of the cloister is surrounded by four galleries supported by Romanesque-Gothic arches surmounted by tracery circles, each one with a different pattern. The second storey was built in the reign of D. Manuel I in the sixteenth century.

    • The story of D. Ines de castro is like a fairy tall. She was killed by the king D. Afonso IV, because i didn't want the mariage of her with his son D. Pedro. After his father death, in1361 D.Pedro sends the body to Alcobaca Abbey and dies in 1367.

    • Alcobaca, a small town situated roughly 100 km to the north of Lisbon in a fertile agricultural region dotted here and there with gentle hills. Two rivers, the Alcoa and the Baca, (a tributary of the Alcoa runs through the monastery's kitchen) gave the town its name of Alcobaca.

    • Alcobaca has many beautifull old still houses. Unfortunatelly many of theme are not in good shape as this one. Worth the visit.
