The Village of the Batalha, while tourist destination, is one of the most important national level, essentially for the existence of the Monastery of Saint Marie of the Victory. The poet Alfonso Lopes Vieira, classified it as "the most important monument", due to its historical importance.
The Monastery of the Dominicans of Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It was to be the Portuguese monarchy's main building project for the next two centuries. Here a highly original, national Gothic style evolved, profoundly influenced by Manueline art, as demonstrated by its masterpiece, the Royal Cloister.

Amazing architecture. I loved my quick visit here too.
I didn't know that workers had left Batalha for Belem (from one masterpiece to another. . .). Beautiful photos ~ I was here two years ago and thought it was great.
It looks that Batalha is full of wonderful buildings and history.
Great architecture and what a wonderful place to explore!
What a great monastery and lovely architecture !
Nice tips and photos as usual.
Beautiful! This page remebers me Saramago's "Memorial do Convento".
