Its name was given by the explorers Joao Goncalves Zarco and Trist?o Vaz Teixeira, because of the shape of its bay and because there were many monk seals (lobos) back then.
Camara de Lobos is home of the Poncha, a mixture of lemon juice, honey and sugarcane spirit and is readily available at the many local taverns.
If you like to take photos - you will warm to the sights of Camara de Lobos and it's inhabitants.
It was this traditional fishing village that lies five kilometres from Funchal that inspired the late Sir Winston Churchill to paint its lovely surroundings.
In January 1950 when he was still writting the last book of the II world war, Churchill came to Madeira island and started to do something he loved but never did befor, painting! And the scenary was the once village of Camara de Lobos
