Estremoz - Pelourinho

Square - Pelourinho

In this square many men and women had been hanged. In Portugal these squares are called "pelourinhos", and there's a pelourinho in all historical citys and villages. Many pelourinhos date from the XVIIth century.

Estremoz - City Lake

City Lake

The lake is placed next to Rossio, the main square. This lake dates from the XIXth century and has a fabulous saint Augusto in the midle. From here it's possible to see the Castle Tower and the old Palace.

Estremoz - Church - Estremoz

Estremoz - Church

Church

I found no information about this beautifull church. Inside you'll find great wood carving and gilding as many blue tiles, the famouse portuguese azulejos. I think this church dates from the XVII century.

Estremoz - City gates

City gates

The castle city is like a fortress, and there are many doors that will lead you to the walled city. Today, you can take your car inside and visit the city but before these doors were well kept by several guards.

Estremoz - Rua Direita

Rua direita

This street was once the main street of Estremoz. The houses inside the castle walls are very well preserved and show very well how difficult it was to raise a family in such a small space. The villge still preserves the wonderfull cobbled streets.

Address: Rua Direita

Directions: Near the castle

Estremoz - Misericordia Church

Misericordia Church

Built in 1539, the church of the Misericordia located on Estremoz's large market square was once a convent of the Knights of Malta. The street-level galleries of Eestremoz's municipal museum showcase an impressive display of little clay figures called bonecas, for which the town is most famous.

Municipal Museum

In the Town Square there is the remains of a fine palace that was once belonged to Dom Dinis and now is used as the Municipal Museum. On display is a collection of archaeological finds and several rooms have been restored to show off their original splendour.

Chapel St. Isabel

A Chapel that is aptly named after this kindly Queen, records the story of her life in 18th Century tiles and in particular the “Miracle of the Roses”. The fable tells that when carrying money for the poor hidden in her apron the King stopped her and upon his request she opened the apron to reveal only some roses.
