  • From the steam train of ancient times to the most sophisticated cable car of today, Funchal is once again connected to the breathtaking beauty of Monte, which lies in the mountains above the city.
This is an exciting way to show Madeira's hidden beauty without any harm to the environment. The departure station is at the Parque Almirante Reis, located in the old part of the town. This station has good parking conditions, and fits in well with the renovation plans for the old part of the town, which is now almost complete.
The Monte Station is situated near Monte Palace Tropical Garden, at Caminho das Babosas and can receive up to 800 passengers per hour.

  • The beauty of its architecture derives for a blending of Hispano-Arabic and gothic-Romanesque lines. Built in 1514 by the master-builder Pero Annes, on the orders of king D. Manuel, it has one of the most beautiful ceilings of Portugal, carved from local wood in the Hispano-Arabic style.

The bishop's throne follows the Flemish style, while the main door is gothic, and the gilded decorative objects date from the 17th century. There are even some examples of Portugal?s Manueline period in the architectural details.

  • Built between 1489 and 1496 with walls and floors decorated by 17th century azulejo tiles, and fine wooden ceilings in the Hispano-Arabic style, this church also has a collection of recently restored paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Here too is the gothic grave of Martim Mendes de Vasconcelos, son in law of captain João Gonçalves Zarco.

  • This palace has been much altered down the years. It has a crenulated castle tower on the east side, typical of the Manueline period, the first half of the 15th century. Its sculpted stones are also typical of this era. The three bulwarks facing north were built during king Philip's reign.
During the 18th century some alterations were made to the southern facade. Its current facade and the elevated structure was built in the 19th century.
This palace has been put to several uses. It was the residence of hereditary captains or donatarios; then the residence of governors- general (1581-1640); then of the captains- general (1640-1834);the civil governors and now it is the residence for the minister and military commander of Madeira.

  • Located in the district of Sao Pedro some 111 metres above sea-level, the Pico Fort occupies an area of 2,750 square metres.
This fort was built at the beginning of the 17th century, together with other forts that formed part of the town's defensive system against frequent attacks from pirates. It protects the walls over the Ribeira de Sao Joao. It was used as a gunpowder magazine until the end of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century it was transformed into a military and civil prison.

  • The Regional Assembly is now located in Funchal’s original Customs House, built on the orders of D. Manuel in 1508. This is a good example of non-religious architecture from the Manueline period. One can see its gothic influences and the decorative details typical of that period. The old Customs building is the most important building in the town thanks to the preservation of its Manueline features and the great assembly room (Plenário).
