Porto Santo - Baleira Village

Baleira village is the capital of Porto Santo island. Christopher Columbus came to Porto Santo in 1478, just to buy sugar. He married Felipa Moniz Perestrelo, the governor's daughter.

After a couple of years at Porto Santo, Columbus moved to Madeira where he studied navigation and prepared for what became the most famous discovery of all times.

Things To Do: The cathedral

The church was founded as a small chapel (1420-46) of which nothing is left. A 16th century painting serves as altarpiece.

Columbus's house is located just behind the church. After a major restoration The Columbus Museum (Casa Colombo) opened in 1989.

Porto Santo - Cristovão Colombo

museum

The museum is in two buildings. The oldest dates from the period when the navigator was living on the island. There are some portraits of Columbus on display, dating from the 16th and the 20th centuries, and also maps with the different routes he sailed on his voyages of discovery.

Porto Santo - Governor house

Bartolomeu Perestrelo, an astute Italian, became Governor of the island. Christopher Columbus came to Porto Santo in 1478 probably to see Perestrelo, also from Genoa. Columbus met his daughter Filipa Moniz and the two were married in 1479, but Filipa died soon after while giving birth to their son

Clear blue water in a fantastic scenary!
It's quite hard to reach the beach. You have to climb a few clifs but it's worth it!
