Chiang Mai is what you always wanted Bangkok to be, or maybe what it was many year's ago. It is a town that has a tangible sense of history and a bustling student life with many self-indulgent activities to fill almost a week or more of visiting. The moat-surrounded old city is reminenscent of a slower time and you can easily get caught up in exploring the less busy streets, small businesses, and professional Thai massage schools. Silver, antiques, Hill Tribe crafts - you name it Chiang Mai has it!

Favorite Restaurants in Chiang Mai

The HONG TAUW INN is a great place to have slow and fresh northern Thai food unpressured and with lots of local specials. TRY THE SAUSAGE!
Huan Phen Retaurant at 112 Ranchamangla Road in the old town is a must see, great food, interesting setting and kind staff.

Easy to get around with Song Thews

The familiar red trucks (Two benches) will prove to be the easiest on-demand mass transportation you'll ever take. Always have a map or the Thai spelling of where you want to go. Better yet, let a local help you try to pronouce the place correctly. So many people speak English it is easy to find impromptu teachers.

Pros:"Temperature in December and January will give you a new vision of typical tropical South East Asia"
Cons:"It can be daunting to cross the main streets to get into the old city - be careful, some sidewalks are narrow or disappear"
In A Nutshell:"Chiang Mai - Hub for exploration"
