The bridges..

There are only 5 ( i think) bridges remaining of many that are were once in use in this area. They have been restored so that future generations can also enjoy them. They are not used anymore but are mostly for decoration.
Why are thy covered?? I thought it would be because they are wooden, so they would not rot. But I was told that this way the horses would not get spooked by the running water of the river as they were crossing the bridge. I dont know, both reasons sound good to me.

Winterset

Winterset is an interesting place to visit to see some of these beautiful covered wooden bridges of over 100 years old. Winterset is also home to the childhood home of John Wayne. You of course have to have a car to drive to see the bridges. For people not from the US its also a great way to see the heartland of the US. The tourist office of Winterset is in the center of town, on the main square and is very helpful with giving you directions to the different bridges and telling you about other things you can see as well.

If you are a fan of the movie Bridges of Madison Cty there are many places you can visit where the movie was filmed.
The bridges of course, a cafe, the gas station, the place they had a picnic etc.

Thanks for the Tips and pix. I am going there for the John Wayne Centennial and you have just added a second focus, the bridges. In case you want to update your JW Tip, the address is 216 S 2nd St.

Just returned yesterday from Madison County. There are five bridges (one of them is a replica of the burnt one), all listed on the county website.

I remember these bridges from the film -- nice to see real photos of them -- very nice page.
