Tenerife - Island of surpirses

Dolphins near Los Gigantes
I wasnt sure what to expect of Tenerife, I had heard both positive and negative comments and finally had the chance to check it out for myself recently when I went with some friends to do some Scuba diving. I was plesantly surprised! After the initial dissapointment of the ugly buildings near TFN-Norte Airport and the industry near the coast I was happy to find the island has many different and interesting landscapes and places to discover. And the diving was great. Visibility is excellent, and we saw lots of fishes and fed some sting rays too. Another highlight was seeing a huge number of dolphins on a fishing excursion. AMAZING, we must have seen at least 100! Even the captain of the boat was surprised to see so many.
Black sand beach

Volcanic Sand

If you love the beach Tenerife is a good place to go, especially the south where there is more sun, and more tourists. I'm not a beach person, I think laying in the sun is so boring. But I lasted about 30 minutes at this nice little beach in a town near Los Gigantes, or maybe it is Los Gigantes... no me acuerdo...
Anyway, I like the look of a beach with black sand instead of the typical white. Its beautiful. And swimming at these beaches is great. The water is SO clear. For diving its perfect. The Canary islands have some of the best underwater visibility in the world because of the lack of plankton in the water.

On a drive to the northern tip of the island we saw beautiful forests and this rugged coastline with strong waves.
We stayed in a village just south of Santa Cruz for one week, It gave us time to do diving for 3 days, going out on a boat to fish, and driving up closer to the peak of "El Teide" The lunar landscape was beautiful. I only wish I had time to visit some vinyards, the wine there is great too! I definately recommend Tenerife for a nice vacation, even for those like me who dont want to be on the beach all day!
