ISLE OF WIGHT - THE DIAMOND ISLE

by GypsyBessie - last update: Nov 23, 2003

The Needles

The Needles
Probably the most famous landmark of the Isle of Wight.

In October 2001 we stayed in Ryde on the IOW for 5 days Monday to Friday and enjoyed dry sunny weather most of the time. We travelled by coach to Southampton and then by ferry directly to Ryde. See Isle of Wight

The Coastline

The coastline is very beautiful all around the island but is suffering from erosion in certain parts. Also around the coast are "chines" (See my Shanklyn Chine tip)

Multicoloured coastline

The island is renowned for its multi-coloured sand along the coastline. The island is very often referred to as the "diamond isle" because of its obvious shape on the map

Pros:"Very pretty island, lovely beaches, good family seaside resorts"
Cons:"Gets very crowded at the height of summer"

Thanks for sharing. My earliest memory is being on a little boat in a tidal lake with my dad rowing. Great photos.
