Alexandria was named for the family fo John Alexander, a Virginia Planter who in 1669 acquired the tract on which the town begaon. By 1732, the site was known as Hunting Creek Warehouse and in 1749 became Alexandria, thereafter a major 18th century port.
Just to the north of the spot where Great Hunting Creek entered the Potomac River, a tobacco warehouse and some other small buildings had stood for some time on steep bluffs overlooking a small but deep bay. Philip and John Alexander farmed much of the surrounding land and Hugh West oversaw the warehouse along with a ferry and tavern. In 1748, these men joined with merchants John Carlyle, William Ramsay, John Pagan and others to petition the General Assembly for the creation of a new market town. By July of 1749, the community was laid out, named "Alexandria" in honor of the Alexander family. Retreived from Alexandria's History

Walking around in the Marina and the historic part of Alexandria sounds nice. And then end the day with a meal at Fish Market!
Lovely travel pages on the city of Alexandria. The market square and Christ Church certainly sound wonderful to us. Thanks for sharing. ~ho & pang
A great page around George Washington. I enjoyed your Samoyed on duty and the man playing music in the street!
Enjoyed this page on Alexandria. The "Historic Homes Walk" looks like something I would enjoy. The Torpedo Factory - From manufacturing Torpedoes to creating art sounds fascinating.
We spent many weekends in Old Town Alexandria when we lived in the area. Thanks for the tour! Cheers, Mark
Hi Dee, Thanks for visiting my Santorini page. Just over 36 hours until our flight takes off for Europe. Will be away for 63 days, occassionally on VT.
I was just in Alexandria for a school function, I wish I had had the time to tour a bit more.

Thanks for the review of Alexandria. I've enjoyed time exploring the business district and visiting a good friend there. BTW... metro is walking distance to the business district.
Nice memories of several enjoyable visits to Alexandria over the years. Must go back sometime. leyle
