Ok, I was so jazzed about being able to finally see the famed Rockefeller Plaza. Wow, it is beautiful and what a gem among the concrete jungle. I wished I had more time to take better pictures of it, but I was on a whirl-wind tour group headed by sister the little hurricane who lead the way.....lol! You can do a self tour and you can pick these pamplets up at the front desk in the GE Building. The security and information personel were so friendly and just awesome. Me and my sister had fun chatting up a storm with them!
Tour Times: Rockefeller Center Tour Hours: Mon - Sat: 10:00am - 5:00pm (depart every 60 minutes) Sunday: 10:00am - 4:00pm (depart every 60 minutes)

The center began in 1926 and was one of the most significate undertaking to intregrate art, architecture, and landscaping in the middle of a urban city to serve the needs of busy office workers.
The plaza is the very heart of the center. It is is converted into a ice skating rink during the winter months and it is where the annual Christmas tree lighting is a holiday attraction. Any other time it serves as a stunning outdoor restaurant with a full view of the Greek mythological statue "Prometheus - stealing fire from the gods as a gift to man", forged in bronze and covered in gold leaf.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is named after Bishop Patricius Magonus Sucatus born in around 389 on the coast of the British Isle. He found his calling in prayer when he was captured by Irish pagans and held slave when he was just around 13 years of age. He soon escaped but not without enduring starvation and hardships. He found his was back home in Britain. He soon found his calling from his prayers and was ordained by Saint Germanus. He was soon sent to mission in Ireland, not far from his previous enslavement. He soon triumphed over the Druid priest and established church in at Crom Cruach in Leitrim. He has been noted that he had such passion and love for the Irish was determined to protect them from aggressors. His love for the teaching of God and justice guided him. It was said that he lived to a very old age.
Saint Patrick’s was a dream of the first New York Archbishop John Hughes. It soon became a reality after the foundation was poured August 15, 1858, but the rest of the construction stopped because of the Civil War. Fourteen years later May 25, 1879 reconstruction began and was finally completed. Although, the actual appearance did change from ordinary to extraordinary with additions to give it that Gothic look.
They require at time to search bags so be prepared once again. She is a treasure to protect. They welcome all to visit her, but to respect those attending mass and keep your presence towards the back of the church. Not unless you wish to join the service, all is welcome!!

Being an American I can not tell you enough the pride I felt to finally see her in person. My sister was excited because we got a time pass to go upon the platform at the slotted time to walk near her feet. We didn't because of the time constraints, but just seeing her from below was awe inspiring, impressive, prideful, joyful, and so many more emotions that I can keep going on about. I was never an immigrant, but damn sure can relate by finally seeing her and what she presents to us Americans and those past and future Americans to come. I can see the twinkle in everyone’s eye as they took pictures and just stood there staring up at her all inspiring. Simply a sight that all should see!
She was a gift to us from the Parisians in 1880, but she did not become a permanent fixture until Oct 28, 1886. She was declared a National Monument in 1924. Restored in 1986 and has been our "Gem" of the harbor ever since she has set her precious copper feet in United States soil!
From Torch to ground she stands 305 feet. 1in. Just her own height is 151 ft. 1 in. She is covered with a copper skin that has a web of steel bars to give her strength.
Security is a must here, so be prepared. It is as tight as if you’re going into an air terminal before you board the fairies to go to Liberty Island and/or Ellis Island. She is one of our national treasures and we must protect her, so don't take offense if you have to follow security procedures. They have security checks again before you are allowed to enter onto her platform too.
She is open daily except Christmas Dec 25. The only access is via a ferry which you can board in Battery Park at the Castle Clinton National Monument. The ferries leave for Liberty Island, then Ellis Island and return to Battery Park. From New Jersey you board exit from the NJ turnpike exit 14B. Purchase tickets from the rail road building at the north end of the park.

This has been another dream of mine to be able to visit a place where many got there start as Americans. We have to be so thankful for those who crossed those dangerous waters in God know what conditions to get here. I guess I am probably very sensitive, but I could sense the sorrow in these buildings right away. Many did not pass these walls onto to fresh US soil, but many were sent back home for health and other various reasons. Many times they crossed beyond to a golden gate. Yet, this place represents "Hope". Hope for a better life. There is nothing better than hope even if it is through many tears.
The island was a city upon itself. 12 million passed through these gates since January 1, 1892. Over the years they had to constantly expand the facility to accommodate new arrivals by the thousands every month. It had a hospital for the contagious diseases, performed many surgeries and delivered approx. 350 babies. It had a dinning hall and tried to serve the foods according to custom and religion. Tried very hard to provide interpreters for the various languages that pasted onto the shores. Some may think we should have done more, but for the times we did the best we could with what we had. They were hard times for all.
The hall and all the exhibits on three floors are impressive. They provide at cost a self audio tour, plus schedule tours, so check in at the information park ranger desk. There is a gift shop, plus cafeteria too. Outside is a wonderful view of New York sky line and New Jersey too. They provide many park benches and tables too
Open daily except Christmas Dec 25. Price is included with the Statue Of Liberty.

What a difference Times Square has become compared to it’s once seeded past. It was once considered the place you never wanted to venture down to because of the very high crime and pornographic shops. Times Square got it name by the New York Times building that graces the area in 1904. It is during this same year that it started to become tradition for fellow New Yorkers to gather and celebrate New Years Eve. Yet as years past, it has become a very wealthy place for businesses and people to be. Times Square gets 26 million annual visitors each year and has 27,000 residents that live there all ready.
Wow, is the first word out of my mouth when we made our trek onto the streets from the coach bus. I have to admit it was sensory overload with all the people, lights, traffic, noise, and all those tacky billboards were just amazing……..lol!

Formely the RCA building this beautiful structure provides space for several hundred tenants which include General Electric and NBC.
As you enter the front of the building you will be greeted by some very impressive art deco that graces the entrances. Once inside the lobby you'll be once again impressed with a mural on the back wall of the security and information desk called, " American Progress", by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Here you can get tour information of the Rockerfeller Center or NBC Studios too! Or if choose they have these really neat pamplets that assit you with taking a self tour of the surroundings. The gentlemen at the security desk were really cool.
Oh there is a shopping mall downstairs to with shops and restaurants too!*

You can't miss this wonderful pieces of art that graces the front entrance of the building. I was just in awe of it! These pieces of art were created by Lee Lawrie. The central figure is called, "Wisdom" - Mans knowledge" and interprets the laws of nature. You'll probably notice an inscription above the door Isaiah 33:6.

Another pretty cool place to see. So many times seeing this place on TV and to finally get to see it is pretty neat. Its located right among the Rockfeller Center, infact the NBC Studio store is inside the GE Building. Just ask the security information desk personel and they will point in the right direction.
They have been giving tours of the studios since 1933. Just across the street is the Today show's "Window on the World studio, NBC Experience, which includes 2½ floors of exhibit and theater space. There is a 40-seat HDTV Theater that is on the last stop on the Studio Tour, features a 130º screen spanning two floors and three custom projectors showing a continuous presentation on NBC

Nemorino Fri Apr 18, 2008 17:25 UTC Nice New York tips. I spent four years in New York as a college student, but still didn't see everything. Amazing that they have been giving tours of the NBC studios since 1933. (My father passed through Ellis Island in 1928.) | lou31 Tue Aug 21, 2007 23:07 UTC Great pages on New York. How I would love to go there and experience it!...maybe I will one day. But till then I did enjoy this little trip and your pics were good too! | whitecliff62 Mon Feb 20, 2006 20:41 UTC Hi Dee, superb pages, im hoping to finnally see New York next winter, fingers crossed | Minstrelette Mon Nov 7, 2005 04:23 UTC Good tip on the traffic! Drivers seem to be extremely aggressive these days. I've had 2 cars hit me this year (nothing too serious, fortunately). I've written to elected officials and the media about this growing problem. This needs to stop. |
