"Old Fort Niagara" Fort Niagara State Park by Yaqui
Fort Niagara State Park Travel Guide: 8 reviews and 10 photos
The French established the first post here in 1679 as Fort Conti, then as Fort Denoville 1687-88, which was very short lived. Finally in 1726 the French built the permanent fortification of the "French Castle". Britain gained control of the Fort Niagara in 1759 during the French and Indian Wars. They held the post throughout the American Revolution but were forced by treaty to yield it to the United States in 1796. Although, it was recaptured by the British in 1813. It was once again ceded to the U.S.A. in 1815 at the end of the war.
All of the main buildings are wonderfully maintained. There is even an authentic British Infantryman with his trusty "Brown Bess" that gives demonstrations and teaches the history of this wonderful treasure.
- Pros:A testament to mans endurance and faith.
- Cons:Cannot think of any.
- In a nutshell:A great way to spend a wonderful sunny day!

I have read about this fort and it is steeped in history for sure. Your pictures and detail is good
Thank you. My photos are a little old, but we had such a great time back then visiting. My hubby didn't really want to visit it, but once we got there, he really enjoyed. Thanks again!
Interesting stopover Dee...I might not have caught this but the NEW VT FORMAT enabled me to see the intro photo...looks almost like a painting!!! I wonder where the "returned" flag that was taken as war booty was kept all those years??
I just love the historical stops you make!! So entertaining...especially as a history teacher :)
Interesting page, Dee- good info and nice pictures.
Another place of great American history! Nice page!
Most of the visitors at the falls have never heard about this nice historical place, though it lies just a few steps from the main attraction. By the way, nice from you to remember Kumaritashvili and Mrs. Rochette. Thanks for your Budapest visit. Best. L.
Nice page on a very historical area. What a terrible way for all those poor men today, so many lost their lives that way in days gone by!
very nice page. wonder how many people visit here. covers a lot of history not appreciated today, good reading.
Excellent page with interesting historical information! Amusing white French flag over Fort Niagara. Thanks Dee for sharing!
