"Ellis Island - A place of hope!" Ellis Island by Yaqui

Ellis Island Travel Guide: 59 reviews and 148 photos

This place represents "Hope". Hope for a better life. There is nothing better than hope even if it is through many tears.

The island was a city upon itself. 12 million passed through these gates since January 1, 1892. Over the years they had to constantly expand the facility to accommodate new arrivals by the thousands every month. It had a hospital for the contagious diseases, performed many surgeries and delivered approx. 350 babies. It had a dinning hall and tried to serve the foods according to custom and religion. Tried very hard to provide interpreters for the various languages that pasted onto the shores. Some may think we should have done more, but for the times we did the best we could with what we had. They were hard times for all.

My hubbies great grandfather Louis and his brother passed through this island!

One can only imagine how nervous would be immigrants would have been here while they waited to see if they would get into the States or not. Inspiring page Dee.

A place I wish i would have made time for on previous visits. So very much history, nice to see they have done a good job restoring the main hall. Must be a very moving place.

An interesting page Dee! The Dormitory building is beautiful, like something from Europe and not the USA.

Ellis Island would be on my list of places to visit if I ever managed time in the big Apple, interesting page Dee,nice photos and a sunny day to visit too!The daily numbers of "aliens"processed for entry is wild compared to when the Island was functional.

I think the island and the people behind it is interesting. It gives protection and services to anyone from a foreign land who set foot on the 'land of milk and honey'.
