Biloxi means "First People" and was the name of a local Native American tribe that met French explorer Pierre LeMoyne d'Iberville in 1699. He and his men were passing through here because he was looking for the mouth of the Mississippi River. The King of France wanted to claimed this area. Fort Maurepas was established on the east shore now called Ocean Springs. Eight flags have flown over the city including the French, English, Spanish, West Florida Republic, Mississippi Magnolia, Confederate State, Mississippi State, and that of the United States.
Biloxi was incorporated officially in 1838 and the city grew as families and their servants flocked to the area. By 1847 it became on of Gulf Coast's favorite resort towns. During the Civil War, Union troops took over nearby Ship Island and carried out a blockade of the gulf. Citizens tried to protected the city from invasion by the Yankees creating fake cannons made out of logs planted in the sand. Mullet fish, called "Biloxi bacon," saved the locals from starvation during the war years. The first fish cannery opened in 1881, and the city's seafood industry grew. By 1900 Biloxi was termed the "seafood capital of the world.
Biloxi has endured so many natural disasters and the last one was Hurricane Katrina that hit in 2005. It is still in the recovery process. So many structures were lost, but we cannot forget the most precious loss of life.

Visited Biloxi when I was a kid. Would really like to visit once again as I could definitely appreciate more now.
Hi Dee, Enjoyed your page, amazes me why people live in Hurricane territory. Katrina certainly made a mess of this place. Been back from South East Asia for 10 days now, cleaned up our garden and can now complete a few pages. Kota Kinabalu nearly finished.
Great page Dee! Good to read and see photo's of how this community is progressing after several Hurricanes. Looks like quite a bit of interest here, so do hope day trippers are returning.
There was so much lost sadley, but these folks just keep returning and rebuilding. So much history here and thank you for your lovely comments!
I remember seeing news reports a few days after Katrina about the destruction in Biloxi. I'm glad to see from your tips that at least some things have been rebuilt/reopened and that people haven't given up hope.
Excellent page, Dee! I loved your Paws and Stripes ~ USAF Dallas tip and a specially trained English Bulldog! She reminded me my specially trained German shepherds, haha!
Very interesting (and a little sad) to read of the effects of Katrina here, but good to see that the town is recovering so well. Love the idea of the tree carvings!
Interesting page Dee. The power of wind and water, not much can withstand it. Good to see the recovery process is nearly complete.
Very nice page!
I have been to Biloxi many times but not since Katrina went though. I enjoyed reading about how it looks now and seeing your great photos.
