~Sunny Field~

Solvang was founeded in 1911 as a Danish American colony on a portion of the sprawling Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, has developed into one of the principal tourist attractions in the country. Located inland along the Central California Coast some 45 miles north of Santa Barbara, the town embodies the expression "Denmark lives in Solvang" with the village of 5,300 representing a page from a Hans Christian Andersen Story.

Solvang meaning Sunny Field, was founded by a group of Danish educators Reverend J. Gregersen, Reverend B. Nordenloft, and Mr. P.B. Hornsyld from the Midwest in 1911 who were in search of a site for a Danish type folk school. They liked what they saw and envisioned the location of the potential town, nestled between the Santa Ynez and San Rafael Mountain Ranges, as an ideal place to launch the school and where settlers could earn a living tilling the rich soil.

Although Solvang has developed into one of the major tourist meccas, its many Danish American residents continue to perpetuate their Danish heritage.

Thank you, Dee! Wonderful detailed tips and photos both indoor and out. We have been to friendly Solvang twice this year and really enjoy the short drive using 154 shortcut from 101. Take a side trip to Santa Ynez airport too when there.

Interesting travel page. Little Mermaid certainly reminds us of the city of Copenhagen in Denmark. Thanks for your lovely virtual tour of this Danish American town. Thanks also for visiting our Japan travel page. ~ho & pang

I never knew there was a place in California where they keep up the Danish traditions. Good that they even have a genuine Danish bicycle shop in Solvang!
