Willow Springs Race Track | Lean Mean Handsome Hubby Machine! |
Rosamond began back in 1877 and was named after the daughter of an official of the Southern Pacific Railroad. After the first post office arrived on May 1855 located at the Tropico Gold Mine site, David Bayles was appointed the first Postmaster serving 100 people.
It was no surprise in the late 1890's mining and cattle were the main source of income. Soon the Lida Mine (later Tropico Mine) opened and the hills swarmed with miners since ore was discovered and went as high as $100,000 per ton. Then in the 1930's, mining again boomed with the price of Gold going up and the town grew dispite the depression. Army Air Corps soon discovered the Muroc dry lake bed and was named Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards AFB).RosamondCalifornia’s Abandoned Mines - Stay Out - Stay Alive! |
