"~La Mesa~" La Mesa by Yaqui

La Mesa Travel Guide: 36 reviews and 104 photos

Las Mesa, in Spanish means “The Plateau", but known its locals call it “Jewel of the Hills”. Founded in 1869 when the lands once belonging to Mission San Diego de Alcalá, it was broken up by the Mexican government. After the Civil War, settlers fluxed in here looking to buy some land to start a farm or ranch and with the discovery of gold, many miners along with their families ended up making this their new home. The town was incorporated as a city in 1912.

La Mesa is not a huge community, but it is one that is trying to preserve its past. It has such a lovely little down town that still holds its original charm. Lots of lovely cute cottage like homes dot the area and you can tell how much civic pride they have. It is a lovely community to explore.

Great tips on La Mesa! I'm just beginning to explore this town in San Diego and surprised to see you had a page here already! You've given me a good start on what to see here. Thanks!

Dee, fabulous little page. I especially like the intro photo of the steam train. Interestesting to see that La Mesa is served by a tram (trolley).

Wow! Dee, you do get around. I was a YMCA summer camp aquatic director for 2 years in La Mesa. Taught over 600 children to swim. Great reward was seeing the smiles on their and their parents faces.

Dee, from your pages I have learnt that USA has numerous small towns, all with a history of building the nation.

As always from you Dee, such interesting historical tips :-) I loved the walk of fame details, and was intrigued by the idea of the Depot as worm farm! Lovely old houses too
