Called many names: Brown - Siding 16 - Magnolia

Inyokern is such a tiny community, but one horse lovers enjoy. Once settle as an aqueduct town called “Brown” it boasted a population of almost 3,000, which now consist mostly of ranches and farms. Then Inyokern was called “Siding 16” in 1909 when the Southern Pacific laid railroad lines through here from Mojave. Then it took on the name of Magnolia when the US post office opened in 1913. Yet, the residence changed it to Inyokern because of being right on the border of Inyo/Kern County. It is located right outside the Ridgecrest community, so the residence can enjoy all the amenities Ridgecrest has, which includes all the outdoor recreation of desert landscapes and the natural historical beauty such as Fossil Falls (Joshua Forest west of here). It is a very small downtown, which you can pass by in a blink of an eye….so do not blink ok because it has some neat antique shops, restaurants, gas station, and a motel. It has the other distinction of having an Airport, which host an Air show and Open House every year.

This is a really neat small community, so make some time and at least, rest, eat, or just browse the really neat antique & gift shops!

Howdy Folks, drop by for a spell!

Freeman Junction Historical Marker

Pros and Cons

We saw some little places like this on our last trip - down at heel looking accommodation vs.shopping palaces, history markers and an air of mystery and abandonment. I noticed the town was founded in the year of my mother's birth when my Dad was already 12 years old!

Great hotel tip! Always good to learn about accommodations which are within walking distance of stores or restaurants.
