NO. 671 SITE OF THE TOWN OF GARLOCK - In 1896, Eugene Garlock constructed a stamp mill near this spot to crush gold ore from the Yellow Aster Mine on Rand Mountain. Known originally as Cow Wells by prospectors and freighters during the 1880s and early 1890s, the town of Garlock continued to thrive until 1898, when water was piped from here to Randsburg and the Kramer-Randsburg rail line was completed. Now some buidlings are still standing, but fenced to protect them from vandals and to keep those adventurers safe for nails, spliters and snakes.

Seeing this huge stone historical marker here is neat because it stands out, when we were taking pictures of it, some people actually stopped to see what we were doing. So this present itself to teach others some history they were passing by. What is unique about the stone, is a couple of round holes on the top of it. They look like holes drilled out for dynamite.

Originally called Cow Wells by the miners in the 1880’s, it was just a little community that was a major supply point for many of the local miners and then became substantial because of stamp mill that was brought in by Eugene Garlock in 1896. What is a Stamp Mill? It was a huge contraption used to crush gold ore that was being mined and brought here from the local miners. I noticed the railroad track still graces itself along here, since many of the lines were tore up back in the 1930’s. Now some buidlings are still standing, but fenced to protect them from vandals and to keep those adventurers safe for nails, spliters and snakes.

What is unique is the one house looks like it is made out of railroad ties. Hmmm, plus it has a flag pole. This might have been the postoffice at one time.
