Red Rock Canyon State Park & Jawbone Canyon

I have an endearing trait and appreciate for all the God has created. He can giveth and take away in a blink of an eye with the help of Mother Nature, but has given us some of the most precious commodities outdoor lovers can enjoy. Red Rock Canyon is one of those. Kawaiisu Indians who found this home drew some of the most beautiful petroglyphs in El Paso Mountains we have today. Red Rock Canyon also served as landmark in 1870’s for 20-mule team freight wagons that stopped here for water. (See Boron Mojave) Rock Canyon State Park is a natural beauty due to its red, pink, brown, white layers of rich color and has some of the neatest rock formations. They are called fluted folds that are the result of wind and rain carving them out since the lighter rock is softer than the red or brown tops layer of rock. It was established as one of California’s Kern County State Park in 1968.

It is a favorite place of movies, commercials, video such as Jurassic Park to be filmed at. It is also a favorite place where science teachers bring their students to study the geology of the surroundings. Let’s not forget it’s a great place for photography.
Desert Springs Marker No. 476

Historical Marker

The Cantil community name derives from Spanish for "steep rock". I haven’t found much history other being home to Jawbone Canyon and Red Rock Canyon State Park. Yet, like so many California communities in this area beginnings started because of Gold, Silver, Borax, The Railroad or California Aqueduct. According to THE CARSON AND COLORADO RAILROAD COMPANY Historical Outline, Compiled by S.P. Bureau of News, March, 1948Cantil was incorporated into the California desert scheme due to transport supplies for the California aqueduct. Construction was finished on a railroad line to connect Mojave to Searless Valley in 1908. Cantil is not far from Highway 14 and very near California City. Cantil also is home of the Honda Test Track Facility. They have open house every now and then. We’ve been to it and it is a very interesting facility.

Your main photo is outstanding! I fully agree with your warning about flashfloods. I once saw a little one in Greece and though small it was impressive! Interesting markers!

Great page, Dee. I loved the tips on Josie Bishop & Pancho Barnes. I have read about these women before. Seems that they have. a special breed of brave pioneering women 'out West'. Canyons look beautiful.
