Alabama Hills Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 23 photos
Alabama Hills was named after a Confederate warship that wreaked havoc on the northern shipping during the Civil War, by locals who were loyal to the south during the Civil War. This area is an array of strange and wondrous landscapes. It was made popular during the 20’s since it offered the variety of so many types of landscapes. It served as the backdrop in over 500 films and TV shows. Westerns were the most popular filmed here. It has doubled as landscapes such as India in the movie Gunga Din, the Himalayas, Gladiator, Rawhide, and How the West Was Won. Yet, the latest have been Tremors, Iron Man and Transformers 2. You just cannot miss the landscape at the beginning of that movie.
You can pick up one of these wonderful guide books in the gift shop area of The Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History. It cost about $2. I think it is well worth it!
- In a nutshell:Stark beauty abounds!

Great landscapes! No wonder so many films have been made here.
Dee, another fabulous little page of yours. The mountians in this region look indeed stunning. I would love to do some hiking here.
Movie buff's would love this area. I didn't realize so many were made in the same location. I would buy the Movie guide book for lasting memory!
Amazing all those movies and TY shows made here, I remember the westerns, but would never have imagined that Bengal Lancers and other movies on India were made here.
Great page! Great read & informations on hiking Mt. Whitney trails!
Just booked my trip to California this summer !!!!! :) Love this page, I'm ready, I've BEEN ready! Can't wait to see more....
Thanks for the Hollywood history lesson. I'll have to pay more attention to the scenery in the next western I watch.
Hi Dee, the Alabama Hills is one of my favorite spots along hwy395. I have a few photos of them in my Lone Pine tip pages. I always find a different look each time I visit.
Great new page, Dee. I THOUGHT those pics looked familier lol! Must have seen them in some movie. The face on rock would have made me smile too.
