Founded in 1872 as a stagecoach stop along the mail route on the Butterfield Overland Line. It was called Gila Bend for the 90 degree bend of the Gila River. Called the "Crossroads of the Southwest" since the stage coach routes, freight routes and railroad crossed here making it one of the most important transportation routes in the Southwest.
