First State Capitol of Utah Top right picture in this postcard created by me is Utah's very first state capitol builiding. It was built in 1855. Also designated as Utah's very first Park in 1930. Now is stands as a tribute of the vast land it served and houses many relics of early Utah. |
| | ~Entrance to Monument Valley Tribal State Park~ The valley's earliest inhabitants include the Ice Age Paleo-Indian hunters (12,000-6,000 B.C.), Archaic hunter-gatherers (6,000 B.C.-A.D. 1), and Anasazi farmers (A.D. 1-1300). The latter group's pottery styles reflect a regional variation known as Kayenta Anasazi. As early as the 1300s, San Juan Band Paiutes frequented the area as temporary hunters and gatherers. They named it "Valley or Treeless Area Amid the Rocks" and vested the landscape with supernatural qualities and mythological stories. For example, Totem Pole Rock is said to be a god held up by lightning, El Capitan a sky-supporter, and all of Monument Valley near Goulding's Trading Post a Hogan that faces east. |
~ Salt Lake City, Later Day Saints Temple Square~ Construction began just four days after entering the Salt Lake Valley when Brigham Young declared, "Here we will build the temple of our God." Six years later construction began in 1853. They carried loads of granite by wagon pulled by oxen 20 miles away from Little Cottonwood Canyon that took fours days to travel. The monument edifice, surmounted by six spires took 40 years to complete. It was dedicated in 1893. It is closed to the public. It is reserved for Mormons only for baptisms and marriages, which is considered there most sacred place. | | |

ncfg Thu Sep 3, 2009 21:18 UTC Great page! | deecat Thu Jul 16, 2009 01:40 UTC Another winning combination of great photographs, well written tips, super introduction, and your usual positive, passionate enthusiasm, which I adore. | BruceDunning Thu Jun 25, 2009 19:55 UTC Very good presentation of SLC and other areas. I now learned of the Air Force museum is here, and did not see it when in SLC 20 years ago. | richiecdisc Tue Jun 23, 2009 19:17 UTC Great tips, Dee. I missed the Rooster Brewpub and it's not like me to miss a good beer, even with bad service. ;) Not a big fan of that hotel going up at Monument Valley. That's a little too close to a sacred spot. |
