Off The Beaten Path: Try the East Coast

  • The east coast of peninsular Malaysia is a best kept secret. The beaches are beautiful and almost empty. My favorite place was the Marang Resort and Safaris. The bugalow was 180 ringgit (~$45) for 3 people on the river side but the beach was just over the sand dune. You can play in the ocean, catch fish off your porch or take a boat to Pulau Kapas to snorkel in a marine park.

  • You can fish off the porch of your Marang Resort and Safaris river bungalow. I heard the buntal on the left did not mind being caught but the pomfret on the right did. LOL, we let both of them go.

  • Marang is a picturesque fishing village located where the Sungai Marang (Marang River) runs into the ocean. Climb the tower in the small park and get a good view. You can get good food in the market, just pick a place that serves Halal food. Marang Resort and Safaris is 2 km. south.

Off The Beaten Path: Endau - Another East Coast Find

  • The Endau Beach Resort is north of Mersing and south of Padang Endau. Don't be fooled by the fishing village where the road seems to end. Turn south for a couple of kilometers and be ready for a treat. You can even have a whole island to yourself. The food in the outdoor restaurant is quite good and reasonably priced. If you get a room up the hill, the view is great but you must be able to climb many stairs.

Off The Beaten Path: Stay on Your Own island
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Endau Beach Resort has it's own island. After a short boat ride, you can stay in a rustic, traditional Malay, thatched-roof house or just take a day trip there. Running water (not potable) is available. The snorkeling is not bad. The view includes the fishing village on stilts shown in the picture.

Off The Beaten Path: Endau Ghost
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaysia - Fish Skeleton on Porch Ceiling

  • My porch (picture on the right) at the Endau Beach Resort had a ghost. One of my friends is sensitive to such things. When she came to knock on the door of my room, she felt something brush her hair and screamed. When we ran outside, we saw nothing until we looked up. Someone had put a fish skeleton on the ceiling of the porch (picture on the left). We did not know what it meant but something was different there. Was the skeleton to keep the ghost away?
